Property Tax Billing & Collection

Property Tax Bills

Property tax bills are generally mailed around December 15th of each year. The City tax rate is determined after the approval of the budget by the Common Council usually at the end of November. In addition to your municipal taxes, your bill includes taxes levied by other taxing jurisdictions in which your property is located (Middleton Cross Plains Area School District, Madison Area College (MATC), Waunakee School District, Dane County, and the State of Wisconsin).

Acting as an agent for the Dane County Treasurer's Office, the City of Middleton collects taxes through January 31st (postmarked) of each year. Tax bills may be paid in full or a first installment, one half of the total bill, on or before January 31. On February 1st, unpaid taxes are turned over to the Dane County Treasurer’s office for collection. The amounts outstanding, as well as any previous year's taxes can be accessed through the Dane County Treasurer’s Office or by calling (608) 266-4151. Second installments and any outstanding balances are due on or before July 31, paid to the Dane County Treasurer's Office.

Late Payments

A minimum of the first installment is due by January 31st (postmarked). If you do not make at least the first installment by that date, you forgo the installment option and the full tax bill plus penalty will be due to Dane County.
