Arbor Day & Tree City USA
The City of Middleton celebrates Arbor Day each year and is proud to be recognized as a Tree City USA community. Middleton has maintained this designation since 1995, reflecting the City’s long-standing commitment to protecting and growing our urban forest.
Arbor Day
Arbor Day is a national celebration that encourages communities to plant, care for, and appreciate trees. In Middleton, Arbor Day highlights the many benefits trees provide, including cleaner air and water, shade, wildlife habitat, and improved quality of life.
Each year, the City works with local organizations, volunteers, and schools to promote tree planting, stewardship, and education about the importance of a healthy urban tree canopy.
Tree City USA
The Tree City USA program, administered by the Arbor Day Foundation, recognizes communities that demonstrate a strong commitment to urban forest management.
To qualify, communities must meet four core standards:
Maintain a tree board or department responsible for urban forestry
Have a community tree ordinance
Spend at least $2 per capita annually on urban forestry
Celebrate Arbor Day and promote tree education
Growth Award Recognition
In addition to maintaining Tree City USA status, Middleton has received the Tree City USA Growth Award 11 times, including in 2025. The Growth Award recognizes communities that go beyond the basic Tree City USA standards through expanded tree planting, education, and innovative urban forestry programs.
These efforts help ensure Middleton’s trees continue to provide environmental, economic, and community benefits for generations to come.
