Theft of Business Mail

Formatted HTML message

Attention Business Watch Members:

There has been an increase in stolen mail from business mailboxes in the area.  It appears that this is again part of a group who steals business checks from the mail and creates very authentic looking false checks.  These false checks are then cashed by group members with the majority of the proceeds being turned over to the group leader.  The person attempting to cash the checks usually provides their actual ID.  Subjects are attempting to cash checks at a variety of area banks.

Please protect outgoing mail.

Lock your mailbox.  This is one quick and easy solution to keep sticky fingers out of your personal information.  The postal carriers can deposit mail into the box, but no one can make a withdrawal without having the key.  Consider taking your outgoing mail to the post office directly or to a U.S. Postal Service depository mailbox.

Have your payroll check, pension, or Social Security checks automatically deposited into your bank account so that thieves can’t get hold of any hard copies, acid-wash your name off the checks, and cash them for themselves.

Any questions, please contact the Middleton Police Department at 608-824-7300.
