FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Middleton Commits to 100 Percent Renewable Energy
MIDDLETON, WI (July 25, 2018) On Tuesday, July 17, the City of Middleton Common Council unanimously passed Resolution 2018-32, as recommended by the City’s Sustainability Committee, to Address Global Warming Through Clean Energy (100% Renewable Energy Goals). The Resolution establishes goals to meet 100 percent of all City operations energy needs with renewable energy by 2040 and 100 percent of communitywide energy needs with renewable energy by 2050.
The Resolution builds on the City of Middleton’s Sustainability Plan adopted in 2010 which states “The City of Middleton is a leader in energy efficiency and renewable energy generation and use. Public and private energy users are using innovative technologies to make Middleton a “net zero” City that produces all of its energy needs from renewable sources within the City limits.” The Resolution is also a direct result of the ballot referendum results on climate change in November, 2016, which showed a strong 81 percent mandate from City residents in support of mitigating climate change.
The Sustainability Committee has been working on the resolution for the past seven months in concert with the Sierra Club, 350.org and U.W. Cooperative Extension. Middleton joins the City of Madison and the City of Eau Claire along with over 70 other cities across the U.S. which approved 100 percent renewable energy resolutions. Several stakeholders attended the July 17th Common Council meeting to show their support in passing the resolution including residents, students, clean energy advocates and business leaders.
"Bold action to adopt clean energy not only will help protect the climate but ultimately reduce costs, improve citizens’ health and improve the environment overall." Kermit Hovey, Middleton Resident
"On behalf of CLEAN, which represents more than 8 student organizations on the U.W.-Madison campus as well as 50 plus students, I fully support this Resolution and Middleton’s decision to be part of a brighter future.” Kendl Kobbervig, UW-Madison CLEAN (Campus Leaders for Energy Action Now)
"We have really exciting things happening in Middleton and all of them are really driven by the support we know that the community has given us to do more about our climate and about global warming, and so it's a very exciting day, and I'm happy that Middleton is taking the lead on this." Alderperson JoAnna Richard, District 3.
