“Keep It Clean, Drains to Pheasant Branch”

New Storm Drain Mural in Downtown Middleton Uses Art as a Teaching Tool

Unless the streets are flooding, most of us walk right past storm drains every day and don’t think twice about the underground water highway they connect to. In Dane County, these storm sewer highways often travel to local waterways without being cleaned, carrying trash, soil and other pollutants to our lakes, rivers and streams. A new Storm Drain Mural Program led by the Madison Area Municipal Stormwater Partnership, Dane County and Dane Arts Mural Arts (DAMA) is using storm drains as a canvas to educate residents about stormwater pollution through art. These large colorful storm drain murals will capture the attention of those who pass by, help them understand where the stormwater that enters their storm drain flows and get them thinking about what they can do to “Keep It Clean”.

“Middleton has a strong environmental ethic and water quality and stormwater management is critical component of that. I love the creativity of using art as a way to remind people to protect our creeks, rivers, and lakes.” – Abby Attoun, Director of Community Development in Middleton.

On Monday, July 23, a DAMA artist along with students from the Middleton Youth Center will paint a unique mural design on the storm drain located at the southwest corner of Parmenter Street and Hubbard Avenue in Downtown Middleton. Next time you visit the new Middleton Center development, the Mustard Museum, or other parts of downtown Middleton, take a moment to check out the storm drain mural. This mural will be one of 20 storm drain murals to be painted on highly visible storm drains across Dane County this summer. Another mural was painted recently at the southeast corner of Parmenter Street and Franklin Avenue in front of Gary’s Art and Frame.
