Press Release:  Auto Theft

12/14/17

On Thursday, December 14, 2017 at 3:20pm, Middleton officers received a report of a vehicle that had just been stolen from a residence in the 7100 block of Mockingbird Lane.  Reports indicate that a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse was stolen from an open garage and that the owner was unable to see who took the vehicle.

Officers were in the area within a couple minutes and, within about twenty minutes, officers were able to work with OnStar to receive a location of the vehicle on Gammon Road in the City of Madison.  With the assistance of OnStar, the vehicle engine was disabled and the vehicle was located by Madison Police in the 6800 block of Schroeder Road in the City of Madison.  The occupants fled on foot from the vehicle and a K-9 unit from Madison Police was called to assist.

Within less than 90 minutes of the initial report, thanks to the coordination of our officers with Madison Police and Onstar, officers located and arrested a 14-year old male from Madison.  He was in possession of stolen credit cards & a realistic looking gun & was tentatively charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Owner’s Consent, Party-to-a-Crime of Burglary, Possession of Stolen Property, Juvenile Runaway and Juvenile in Possession of a Dangerous Weapon.  He was transported to the Dane County Juvenile Detention Center.

Today’s incident, along with numerous other recent reports of stolen vehicles in the City of Middleton and across Dane County, highlights the importance of taking a few simple steps to help ensure that you are not the next victim.
  • Always lock your vehicle.
  • Never leave keys or electronic fobs in your vehicle.
  • Whether in your garage, driveway or a public area, never leave your car unlocked and running.
  • Always keep your garage door closed.
