City of Middleton Alerts Public to Scam Targeting Planning and Zoning Applicants

MIDDLETON, Wis. — The City of Middleton is alerting residents, applicants, and development professionals to a scam targeting individuals with pending zoning and land use applications before the Middleton Plan Commission.

In recent days, the City of Middleton has identified fraudulent emails sent to applicants and agents listed on committee agendas. These emails falsely claim to be from a “Planning Commission” and include fake invoices requesting payment.

While the recent activity was identified through plan commission agendas, this type of scam could be adapted to target other committees or application processes.

“This is a reminder that bad actors will go to great lengths to impersonate trusted public institutions,” said City officials. “We want applicants, contractors, and residents to pause before responding to unexpected emails requesting payment and to verify the source before taking any action.”

Applicants who may have been affected have been notified directly. At this time, there is no indication that payments were made to the fraudulent sender.

Important Reminders for Applicants and the Public

Official City of Middleton emails will always come from an address ending in @cityofmiddleton.us.

The City does not request payment through unsolicited emails or unofficial invoices.

If you receive a suspicious message:

- Do not respond
- Do not click links or make payments
- Delete the email immediately

Anyone who believes they may have received a fraudulent message related to a City of Middleton application is encouraged to contact City staff directly using official contact information listed on the City’s website, www.cityofmiddleton.us.
