Middleton Agencies Join Forces for National Move Over Day
A simple reminder that saves lives: Move Over or Slow Down
Middleton, WI — October 18, 2025 —Today is National Move Over Day, and Middleton’s emergency responders and public works crews are teaming up to spread one clear message to drivers across our community: Move over, or slow down. Lives depend on it.
Outside the Middleton Fire District headquarters, emergency lights flashed as crews from the Fire District, Police Department, EMS, and Public Works lined up side-by-side for a group photo, illustrating the many people this law protects. From firefighters and paramedics to snowplow drivers and public works equipment operators — every one of them faces the same danger on the roadside when drivers don’t take the time to move over or slow down.
Wisconsin’s Move Over Law requires drivers to move out of the lane closest to any vehicle with flashing lights that’s stopped on the side of the road — or to slow down significantly if a lane change isn’t possible. It applies to police, fire, EMS, tow trucks, highway crews, and utility workers.
Here’s what drivers should do:
Move Over: If it’s safe, change lanes away from stopped vehicles with flashing lights.
Slow Down: If you can’t safely move over, reduce your speed and pass with caution.
Stay Alert: Avoid distractions and keep an eye out for anyone working on or near the road.
National Move Over Day is a time to remind all drivers that protecting the people who protect us is a shared responsibility. When you see flashing lights ahead, remember:
Move over if you can. Slow down if you can’t. Either way, you could save a life.
