City of Middleton and Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District Reinforce School Safety and Community
Partnership Ahead of New School Year

Middleton, WI — The City of Middleton and the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District (MCPASD) are collaborating to reassure families, staff, and students about the robust safety measures in place as the new school year begins.

Middleton Police Chief Steven Thompson said:
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our students and staff. Adding a third School Resource Officer this year reflects our commitment to being visible, approachable, and ready to respond in our schools. Our officers work closely with district staff and families, not only to provide security but also to build trust and positive relationships. Together, we’re making sure our schools remain safe places to learn and grow.”

Both the City and School District are taking a proactive approach to communication and collaboration. Together, they reaffirm their commitment to keeping schools safe, supporting students and staff, and maintaining strong community partnerships.

Dr. Dana Monogue, MCPASD Superintendent, added:
“Keeping our schools safe requires all of us working together. We encourage parents, students, and staff to use the Speak Up, Speak Out Wisconsin tip line if they see or hear anything concerning. The link can be found at the front of every district and school website, or students can always report directly to a trusted adult. Along with counseling services, reporting systems, and school-based supports, these resources ensure our students and families feel safe, supported, and heard. We should never underestimate the power of community or the importance of truly knowing one another. Reaching out to a neighbor, listening to someone’s story, or speaking up if you are concerned about a family member or friend can be the difference in someone’s life.”

This school year, MCPASD is expanding its School Resource Officer (SRO) program to four officers. The City of Middleton Police Department provides three SROs, and the Village of Cross Plains Police Department provides one. The newest officer will be based at Middleton High School, giving the school two dedicated SROs. The other two officers are assigned to the middle schools and also provide support to the elementary schools. Expanding the program reflects the City and District’s shared commitment to building trust, strengthening safety, and supporting positive learning environments.

Asher Torbeck, Safety and Security Coordinator, said:

"Safety in our schools is built on both preparation and prevention. This year, in addition to adding another School Resource Officer, our Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management team, which works to identify and respond to potential safety concerns before they become serious, hosted a training this summer at MCPASD led by the Wisconsin Office of School Safety on the most up-to-date processes. Combined with our secure entry systems, regular drills, and strong partnerships with law enforcement, these efforts add another layer of protection and peace of mind for our families, staff, and students.”

Both organizations encourage parents, students, and staff to speak up if they see or hear anything concerning and to use the resources available through schools and community partners. Counseling services, reporting systems, and school-based supports will continue to be available to ensure students and families feel safe, supported, and heard.

Mayor Emily Kuhn emphasized the importance of community-wide vigilance and partnership:
“Our schools are the heart of this community, and the safety of students and staff is a responsibility we all share. By strengthening our partnerships, adding additional school resource officers, and keeping open lines of communication, we are reinforcing our commitment to a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for every child.”
