2019 Dane County Housing Summit Summary

The Next Generation of Housing! It was a great event - with over 250 participants. Thirty-five speakers shared their expertise and covered a wide range of topics from housing 101 and the intersection on health and housing, to how to put together a housing deal and the importance of transportation in addressing the housing crisis. We also had two outstanding keynotes to begin and end the day. Thanks to Linda Tirado, author, Hand to Mouth: Living in Bootstrap America, and Kirsten Delegard, Co-Founder of the Mapping Prejudice Project.

For the first time in DCHI's five year history, Executive, Joe Parisi and County Board Chair, Sharon Corrigan were joined in their opening remarks by the Mayor of Madison, Satya Rhodes-Conway. County leadership cited the critical importance of each individual, and stakeholder group continuing their work to help solve the housing crisis; the need for higher wages to help more people gain access to housing; and, the important role employers can play in helping to support workforce housing solutions. Building on the theme of the 2019 summit of breaking down silos, the Mayor shared a regional vision that prioritized working together and across jurisdictions to address the housing crisis "we're not going to solve this problem alone," she said.

If you missed the start of the summit, check out the Welcome and Opening Remarks Video.

Since the 2019 Summit, there has been much gratitude and enthusiasm expressed, as well as strong interest in continuing several of the subjects raised at the summit sessions. The Housing Innovation Lab participants expressed their interest in continuing to explore innovation around housing. The Mapping Prejudice Project session also made a significant impact on many participants and local leaders. We will be having discussions to review the opportunities to continue work on both of these topics, and will keep you posted.
