[ARCHIVED] Paper Cups Are Now Recyclable

Pellitteri Recyle Paper Cups.PNG

We are excited to announce you can now place your paper cups in your curbside recycling cart for collection and recycling.

Pellitteri Waste Systems installed new recycling sorting technology at their material recovery facility, Kipp Street Station, which allows them to include paper cups for recycling. Paper cups, such as coffee and soda cups, can be placed in your recycling cart. Please be sure paper cups are clean and empty before placing them in the recycling.

Paper Cup Recycling Tips:

  • Empty & Clean - free of liquids or residue
  • Lids & Straws go in the trash - not recyclable at this time
  • Cardboard Sleeves - remove and place in the recycling separately

Historically, paper cups were seen as a contaminant in the paper stream. Recently, paper mills have been putting in technology that allows paper cups to be recycled. Now that the paper mills will recycle paper cups, Pellitteri has invested in retrofitting their equipment to allow for 3-dimensional paper cups to be recovered for recycling.

Paper cups will be sorted and sent to paper mills in the Great Lakes region to make new recycled-content products, such as paperboard, tissue paper and containerboard.

This program expansion is supported in part with a grant from the Foodservice Packaging Institute and the Carton Council of North America.
