The purpose of the Assessor’s Office is to provide fair and equitable valuations of all locally taxable Real and Personal Property as mandated by Wisconsin State Statutes and The Wisconsin Assessment Manual. The Assessor’s Office maintains all assessment records and legal documentation and provides reports as required by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.
The primary duty of the assessor is to discover, list, and value residential, commercial, agricultural, and personal property. This information is recorded on each year’s assessment roll. Many individuals, such as property owners, prospective buyers, appraisers, real estate agents, builders, title companies, and government agencies may utilize this information for various reasons. The Wisconsin Department of Revenue assesses all manufacturing property in the State of Wisconsin.
Generally speaking, property taxes are calculated by multiplying the Assessed Value by the Mill Rate (tax rate). The assessor assigns the assessed value to the property; however the mill rate is determined by the budgets of the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District, Waunakee School District, Madison College (MATC), the State of Wisconsin, Dane County, and the City of Middleton. The assessor is not involved with establishing mill rates or in the collection of taxes.
